Bathroom Sink Buying Guide
The bathroom sink and faucet are an important part of any well designed bathroom. The right bathroom sink can be both functional and fashionable. Listed below are the most common styles of bathroom sinks.
Types of Sinks
Self Rimming sinks
These sinks come in a large variety of sizes, shapes, and hole configurations. They are mounted from above the counter with a visible rim and can be used with all types of countertops.
Undermount sinks
Installed from underneath a solid surface counter top, such as granite, marble, stone or man-made material, such as Corian and does not have a “rim”. Counter mounted or wall mounted faucets are common with this design; therefore the number of holes for the faucet is not a factor in this sink application.
Pedestal sinks are freestanding sinks
These sinks sit on their own bases. These sinks are a great space saver, making them ideal for smaller bathrooms and powder rooms. When selecting a pedestal sink, be sure to consider the finish of the exposed plumbing items (drain and supply lines) underneath and match them to your faucet.
Vessel sinks
Typically sit on top of a counter or furniture top and come in various shapes and designs. Wall-mounted or tall vessel filler faucets that provide adequate clearance above the rim of the sink are common faucets for this application. Some vessel sinks come with pre-drilled holes so that faucets can be mounted directly to the vessel.
Console sinks
They combine the style of a pedestal while providing larger counter areas. Console sinks come complete with either (2) or (4) legs for support. The plumbing under the sink will be visible, be sure to consider the finish of the exposed plumbing items underneath and match them to your faucet.
Vanity Tops
A one-piece counter top that has the sink built in and are made from man-made materials, such as Corion. These sinks do not come with bases, be sure to know the exact dimensions of your vanity cabinet to ensure a proper fit. Tops are generally up to 1” larger than the vanity they sit on, which provides a slight overhang.
Vanities
These are marble countertops complete with a sink basin and carved wood cabinets/bases. The cabinet styles add plenty of storage and come in a variety of sizes, colors and finishes and add an elegant touch to any bathroom.
Wall Hung sinks
These are very popular in smaller bathrooms because they are hung directly on the wall and save floor space. They can be installed at any height on a flat wall or in a corner and are often offered with an optional towel bar.
Materials to Consider
Vitreous China & Fireclay Sinks - A ceramic-based material with a smooth and glossy finish that is very durable. These sinks come in a wide range of colors that coordinate with other bathroom fixtures.
Glass Sinks - Most are made from tempered glass, which are stronger than you would expect. Glass sinks come in many contemporary and eclectic designs.
Enameled Cast Iron Sinks - These are made of solid cast iron, layered with a deep enamel surface. These sinks are extremely heavy, long lasting and resist almost any type of structural damage and are available in a wide variety of colors.
Stainless Steel Sinks – Most are manufactured from 18 or 20 gauge steel and are very strong. Some are undercoated with a sound deadening material that reduces noise. A great option if you are looking for an urban, contemporary or modern styled bathroom.
Solid Surface Materials - Available in a variety of colors and can mimic granite and other high-end stones. They are heat and stain resistant. Though not completely scratch-proof, scratches do buff out easily.

How much will this hurt resale?
I have a 2 bedroom, one bath home. It's an 81 year-old bungalow. Very small. The bath needs to be remodeled. It has a very small tub shower. To fit a standard size tub, the wall has to be bumped out, making the 2nd bedroom smaller -- too small, in fact, according to my realtor. I am considering turning the tub shower into just a shower. This is my only bathroom, so no tub anywhere else. It'll be very nice, travertine, semi framless glass, etc. Everything in the bathroom will be travertine (floor) with custom cabinetry, vessel sink, etc.
How much will not having a tub hurt resale?
I would not expect the lack of a tub to hurt resale value.
If you are able to supplement no bathtub with a whirpool bath somewhere else, that would obviously work in your favour.
The difference between a bathroom with a tub and one with a shower in a listing is very small, if anything. Both are commonly considered 1 full bath yet some listings will call it a 3/4 bath. This works for most people with the exception of those with children.
Just make sure you do the shower design well. I am an architect and I have seen many people just put in a prefab unit instead of the nice tile they had originally envisioned and they end up with a crappy, still small, bathroom.
There will be millions of options available for specifying the materials so looking on the internet and perhaps stopping by an office of a manufacturer would help out.
