KNOW-HOW’S OF THE 12-VOLT BATTERY

Before we launch into details of the 12-volt battery, let’s briefly understand how a standard battery works?

A battery, defined by the dictionary, is a device that converts chemical energy directly to electrical energy. Possibly the first ever chemical battery – voltaic pile – was developed by Italian physicist, Alessandro Volta (1745–1827). The unit of measurement of the battery is Voltage (measured in Volts). Batteries can be divided into two categories: Primary or non-rechargeable batteries and Secondary or rechargeable batteries. Example of Primary batteries – Alkaline, Lithium and Secondary batteries - Lead-acid, Lithium-ion battery.

The 12-Volt Battery

The 12-volt battery is available in both, Primary and Secondary, forms. The 12-Volt battery is used in outdoor applications that require larger amounts of energy to operate. However, it is sometimes recommended to use a rechargeable 12-Volt battery if the product is being used frequently. Non-rechargeable 12-volt batteries can become expensive if they need to be purchased often. Long term cost-effectiveness of the 12-volt battery can be determined by the product type and usage frequency. Manufacturers, over time, have attempted to reduce the size of the 12-volt battery to a portable one to run applications like fish-finders. The 12-volt battery also finds common usage in transport applications like cars, motorcycles, boats. Most vehicles use rechargeable 12-volt batteries as the electricity being generated by the battery is only required for ignition.

The sizes of a 12-volt battery can greatly vary based on the ampere (measure of the amount of electric charge passing a point per unit time) per hour that they must generate. They can be voluminous and heavy, like those found in vehicles or relatively smaller like batteries found in children's toys.

The 12-volt battery has various kinds, suited to an application:

(i)                 12-volt sealed lead acid batteries ideal for powering children’s ride-ons or mobility use

(ii)               12-volt lithium batteries for powering off-road electric vehicles and high speed motor-sport

(iii)             12-volt solar battery and 12-volt battery charger used to bring up solar-energy run automobiles or personal watercraft

(iv)             gel 12-volt battery used in refrigerators, navigation equipment

It is difficult to list every kind of 12-volt battery or even its every usage but it is considered one of those products that find application in our everyday life.

Hot tip

The life of a battery can be increased by storing batteries at low temperatures, like a refrigerator/ freezer! Low temperatures slow down the chemical reactions inside the batteries thus increasing its life-span.

Call your local battery rebuilder. They sell to the public, and can be very cost effective.

I bought a 12v 8D battery, normally well over $300 (they weigh over 120#), for $90 from my local battery rebuilder. 2 years later, it's still going strong. Great investment!!

Check the yellow pages, depending on your vehicle, you could be looking at $30 or less.

Or swing by your local AutoZone, Schucks/Kragen/Checker's and get their cheapest one that fits. It won't cost much more.
