Raising a Bonsai?

I am about to begin raising a bonsai and wanted to know what species of tree would be best for a beginner, how to mix my own soil, where to get tools and wire, whether i should buy a "pre-bonsai" or start it off from a cutting (for my first bonsai), etc.

also if you could discuss a bit (or just give me a good link) of the history and philosophy behind the art of bonsai.

In a nutshell, I've been looking for a hobby to dedicate myself to for quite some time and I think I just may have found it. If people could relate a little of their experience with this practice I would greatly appreciate it.

Trees best for a beginner range from elms and maples to junipers and other conifers. The are best grown outdoors in a well draining soil. Soil is available in a variety of forms from a variety of different places. Soil is best mixed to the needs of your plant and watering routine.

Bonsai is a great hobby, and one that is easy to dedicate yourself to. There is a wealth of information online, in books, and in local clubs. In person advice is an enormous help, so I would first look into a local club or study group. Otherwise, here are a list of links that could prove to be useful in your new hobby.
